Timer

Before you start — WBGT

MSHSAA requires an on-site WBGT reading whenever it is over 80°F. Hourly, from 30 minutes before practice. Not a weather app, not heat index.

WBGT °FWhat you must do
< 82.0Normal. 3+ breaks/hour, 3+ min each.
82.0–86.9Discretion on intense work. Watch at-risk athletes. 3–4 breaks/hour, 4+ min.
87.0–89.9Max 2 hours. 4+ breaks/hour, 4+ min.
90.0–92.0Max 1 hour. 20 min rest inside the hour.
> 92.0No outdoor participation. Cancel or move it.

At the red level: no additional conditioning. No finishers, no post-practice sprints.

A player goes down

Sickling (ECAST)Heat cramp
The playerSlumps quietly, weakIn agony, yelling
The muscleLooks and feels normalVisibly locked, rock hard
WhenMinutes into hard runningLater, after long work

Quiet, with normal-feeling muscles, is an emergency — not a cramp. Call 911, high-flow oxygen, rapid transport. Calling it a cramp has killed players.

Heat stroke: cool first, transport second. Cold water immersion to the neck, under 102°F within 30 minutes. Start cooling yourself if no trainer is on the field.

The first five days

88% of heat-stroke deaths in high-school sport happen in the first five days of preseason, and 95% of those sessions were hard conditioning — serial sprints, timed runs, short rest. The unfit players are the at-risk group.

  • No extra running for the low group inside the acclimatization window. NATA: the 14-day plan applies “regardless of conditioning status”.
  • Never conditioning as punishment. It was the intent in 37% of the heat-stroke deaths.
  • No timed test or serial sprints in week one.
  • Work:rest 1:4 in week 1, 1:3 in week 2. Never worse.

Building them up

Volume 50% of squad in week 1, then 70 / 80 / 90. One variable a week — volume or intensity, never both. No hard running for the first 7–10 days. After that: small-sided games 2–4×/week (2–5 min bouts), plus 15s work / 15s rest intervals, or 4×4 min at 90–95% max HR.

Expect +1 to +2 levels in 8–12 weeks. Level 6–7 clears the health zone for a 15–17 year old — that is the target to give them, not the squad median.

One session, three doses

Same drill for everyone; the cones move. Built from each player’s own latest beep test — this updates itself as they retest.

Do not post these. Give each boy his own number privately — players with lower confidence lose motivation specifically when fitness results are public.

📡 Live shared drill

One clock across every coach’s phone — start a drill, then tap athletes as they finish.

The phone plays the beeps — no recording needed. Turn the volume up; the app holds the screen awake itself.

During the test: tap a player when they drop out — their score locks in at the current stage (tap again to undo). After the test (or any time): tap a player to type a score. Starting shows the test live on every coach's Timer screen — any coach can mark players.

One player a line: shirt number or name, then the score. 7 10.5 · #7, 10.5 · JakeM 10.5. Nothing is saved until you tap Save results.

Add a player

For a player with no phone. Uses his student ID, so when he registers himself later he lands on this same record and keeps his ratings.

Paste one per line: Alex R, Rodriguez  or  12 Rodriguez (tryout number). Tab-separated from a spreadsheet works too. Preview shows who matched before anything is saved.

Pick a team just below, then type each number as the shirt goes out — it saves as you go, Enter moves to the next boy. Varsity and JV share one set of shirts, so a number is worn once across both; C has its own set.

Schedule

Any coach can edit. Set recurring days per team or group (e.g. Keepers), add one-off dates, and cancel days off. Players see their team's days, whole-program days, and any group they're in.

🧑‍🏫 Coaches & teams

Tap a team chip on a coach to cycle: off → assigned → ⭐ head coach of that team (head coach of the program assigns). Every coach can still see and run every practice.

Clean up old names in the data…

Evals, notes and timings written under an old label (initials, or an email an old version cut short) can be folded into the right coach. Head coach only.

👥 Training groups

Groups live inside a team, or under "Everyone" for cross-team training (Keepers, Keeper-Striker, …). A group gets its own schedule chip and its own day plans, and members see them on Today.

Uniforms

Which teams wear one set of shirts. A jersey number can only be worn once within a set — that is what the squad's Numbers hand-out checks against. Tap a team's set letter to move it.

Our school signs in with Microsoft, so the usual way is: sign in once at the worker laptop (it uses your own profile; the worker then renews the session silently). The link box is only for schools with email sign-in links — never paste a password anywhere.
